Douro Wine Tour of Portugal

Portugal’s world famous Port wines are just part of the numerous and excellent wines produced in the country today. From complex reds to the refreshing Vinho Verdes, this self drive itinerary will acquaint you with the Douro Wine district as well as a unique look at one of Europe’s most picturesque and historic countries. This program can be modified to include a private car and driver/guide.

Day 1 -  Lisbon
Private car transfer from Lisbon airport to your hotel. The balance of the day is at leisure.
Optional half day sightseeing tour of Lisbon if morning arrival (see below).

Day 2 -  Lisbon to Porto
Your rental car can be delivered to your hotel (delivery fee of about 15 euros) or you can pick it up at the rental depot. Porto is about 3 ½ hours from Lisbon by the main highway.
You might want to stop in the medieval walled town of Obidos along the way. Your Porto hotel for the next 2 nights is across the river from Vila Nova de Gaia, home to the port wine lodges. Many welcome visitors for touring and tasting.

Day 3 -  Porto
Day free in Porto to explore this colorful city including the UNESCO World Heritage historic city center.

Day 4 -  Lisbon to Pinhao
Drive along the Douro River where, close to Regua, you can visit the Quinta da Pacheca Wine Estate for a tour and tasting of its many types of fine wines, including port. Continue your journey up river to Pinhao and your accommodation for the next 2 nights, the first wine hotel in Portugal.

Day 5 - Pinhao
Morning Wine Tour (11:45am, except Mondays) at Quinta Nova. Visit the vineyards, cellars, bottle and cask room and the tasting room. The balance of the day is at leisure.
There are many activities at the hotel and in the area including olive oil tasting, walking tours in the estate and other wine tastings in the area.

Day 6 - Pinhao to Coimbra
Travel south via Lamego and Viseu. Lamego is also known for its sparkling wine production of Raposeira. Its handsome Baroque mansions are a feature of the town.
Nearby is Nossa Senhora do Remedios, a pilgrimage destination. The church is reached by an awesome double staircase. Viseu is the center of the Dao wine-growing area and boasts a historic city center. Continue to Coimbra, home of one of Europe’s oldest universities. On the top of the hill, you can visit the university buildings including the famous old library.

Day 7 - Coimbra to Lisbon
Its about 200 kms from Coimbra to Lisbon, 2 ¼ hours by main motorway. Between the two cities are many famous sights: The exquisite 12th century Monastery of Batalha, a masterpiece of Portuguese gothic architecture known as Manuline; Fátima, one of the most revered shrines in the world, attracting millions of pilgrims each year; the seaside town of Nazaré with its wonderful seafood restaurants and magnificent beach; Óbidos, a medieval, walled and picture-postcard perfect town perched on a hill just an hour’s drive from Lisbon; Sintra, a magical combination of lush vegetation, mountains, palaces and mansions. Return you car in Lisbon either in town or at the airport.

Day 8
Transfer service to Lisbon airport.

$1329.00 per person, sharing a double or twin room. Based on 2 travelers.
