So many of Lisbon's sights are floodlit that this tour of
the city by night is a favorite. Dinner is included in a
typical Portuguese restaurant featuring "Fado"-Portugal's
own folk songs-and folk dances.
HALF DAY LISBON TOUR US - US$49 (daily)
Description: Discover Lisbon in half day. Drive down
Liberty Avenue (Avenida da Liberdade) to the heart of the
city the Rossio plaza. Then up
the hill to Sao Jorge Castle enjoying the magnificent view
which overlooks the old
city quarters. Stop in the picturesque Alfama district for
wine tasting in a handicraft store. Then drive along the
riverside to Black Horse Square, cross the Bridge over the
Tagus (Tejo) with stops at Belem Tower and the Monument to
the Discoveries. Next visit Jeronimos Monastery (a fine
expample of Portuguese Manueline architecture)and then to
the unique Coach Museum (both closed on Mondays, replaced by
the Ajuda Palace)
HALF DAY ESTORIL COAST/SINTRA - US$83 (daily)
Discover the "Sunny Coast" and its beaches.
Cosmopolitan Estoril is home to Europe's largest Casino.
Estoril and its neighbor town of Cascais boast beautiful
villas built by Lisbon's wealthy. Some are now charming
hotels. Visit Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of Europe
and then drive across the wooded and garden-filled Sintra
Mountains to visit the Vila Palace (closed on
Wednesdays-substituted with Queluz Place).
HALF DAY FATIMA TOUR - US$89. (Apr -
Oct, daily except for 12th of each month)
Visit the Basilica and the chapel of the
Apparitions in Fatima with time to attend mass. Stop in
Aljustre to see the houses where the shepherd children,
Jacinta, Francisco and Lucia were born. Before returning to
Lisbon, visit the places where the Lady appeared to the
children in Valinhos and Loca do Anjo

Description: “Upon arrival in Sintra, visit the
unusual and romantic Pena Palace situated high on a
mountain top with panoramic views to the sea (closed
on Mondays, visit to Queluz Palace instead). Lunch
in Sintra with time to explore the handicraft and
antique shops or sample the local and delicious
tarts “queijadas”.
Depart for Colares, a demarcated wine district, and
then to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of
continental Europe (Portugal’s Azores Islands are
the westernmost outpost of Europe). Pass by Guincho
beach and Boca do Inferno enjoying the coastal
scenery. Continue through Cascais and Estoril before
returning to Lisbon.”
FULL DAY TOUR OF LISBON, ARRABIDA AND SESIMBRA

Visit the old Castle of Sesimbra to admire the beautiful
scenery of this fishing village. Then on to Azeitao to
sample local wines at a famous wine cellar. Visit a
handicraft center that features "Azulejos" the
hand-made glazed tile found all over Portugal. On to
Arrabida mountain, a nature preserve with breathtaking
panoramas over the towns of Setubal and Troia. Coffee breakj
is included at the Pousada do Castelo in Palmela.

FULL DAY TOUR TO OBIDOS, ALCOBACA, NAZARE, BATALHA, FATIMA

Drive northwards to the medieval walled city of Obidos.
Stroll through the picturesque streets of this whitewashed,
redtile-roofed city. On to Alcobaca Monastery (largest in
Portugal) to visit the 12th century Abbey with the tombs of
Pedro and Ines de Castro. Lunch stop at a typical restaurant
in Nazare, the most colorful Portuguese fishing village.
Visit the Batalha Monastery, the most outstanding example of
Portuguese Manueline architecture in the country. Your last
stop is Fatima, site of the shrine and world pilgrimages.
Drive back to Lisbon through a colorful farming region.

A journey back in time as you drive east from Lisbon to the
Alentejo capital of Evora, a World Heritage Site. Rising
from the Alentjo plain, this enchanting walled city boasts
such sights as a Roman Temple, Romanesque Gothic Cathedral,
the Bones Chapel and a University dating back to 1559. A
walking tour of the city center and lunch are included in
your tour. Its encircling walls began with the first century
A.D. when Romans brought the town to prominence by turning
the surrounding countryside into vast wheatfields. The
Alentejo region of Portugal is the world's largest producer
of cork from oak trees.

CITY TOUR OF PORTO $49

Half day tour of Portugal's second largest city. Built on
the right bank of the Douro River, Porto is a colorful city
featuring the old and the new. Its winding, hilly and narrow
streets are a complement to its wide modern Avenues which
spread out to the suburbs. Many bridges of differing
architectural designs span the Douro into Porto. Dona Maria
Bridge was built by Gustave Eiffel. Enjoy a pleasant drive
along the river to Foz. Visit the Stock Exchange Palace, a
pleasing blend of Arabian and European styles, the 12th
century cathedral and a port wine cellar.
THE CHARM OF MINHO $135

Minho is considered the most beautiful province in Portugal.
It occupies the land between the Douro River in the south
and the Minho river in the north. Scenic views and stops to
find local handicraft items are part of this tour. You will
see the city of Guimaraes, birthplace of the Portuguese
nation,and explore the medieval section and the Palace. Next
to Braga, Portugal's main religious center. Then a visit to
Portugal's most spectacular religious sanctuary, Bom Jesus
do Monte. The baroque style shrine of Bom Jesus is
accessible by its famous staircases or by funicular.
Barcelos is next and is known as the country's leading
ceramics and crafts market. Time for lunch (not included).
Don't forget to try Vinho Verde, the lightly effervescent
wine for which Minho is well known.
THE DOURO RIVER VALLEY - US$143
with lunch
A full day tour to the famous Douro River Valley.
Travel along the river with its steeply terraced
hillsides covered in vineyards. Port wine grapes are
the most famous but the Douro River Valley also
produces many fine table wines. Visit Casa de Mateus
and Gardens, a magnificent 18th C Manor House of
flamboyant Baroque architecture and a testament to
the wealth generated by the wines produced in the
area. You will immediately recognize it from the
label of Mateus rose produced nearby. Then to Lamego
and Nossa Senhora dos Remedios, a sanctuary with a
magnificent double stairway leading to the church.
Finally to the picture postcard pretty town of
Amarante on the banks of the River Tamega before
returning to Porto.
SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA,
SPAIN - US$165
Travel north from Porto into Spain and Santiago de
Compostela. During the middle ages, it was the third
most important place of pilgrimage after Jerusalem
and Rome. The Way of St James (St James is Santiago
in Spanish) pilgrimage route is still traveled by
pilgrims today. Visit the magnificent cathedral and
the historical center. Free time in the city center
shopping and lunch (not included). Crossing back
into Portugal, visit the charming resort city of
Viana do Castelo before arriving in Porto in the
evening.
